Building stronger, more equal and healthy communities free from the burden of HIV.
Born out of a national movement to draft the first national strategic plan for AIDS, NACOSA is now a leading national civil society organisation working collectively to build stronger, more equal and healthy communities free from the burden of HIV. We do this by strengthening community systems, mobilising and managing resources, facilitating networking and collaborations, providing and enabling access to services and advocating, learning and sharing widely.
NACOSA works at all levels across the country – from international donor agencies, the corporate sector and national government, right though to sub-district services and small, community groups.
Although we have made significant progress, South Africa still has the highest burden of HIV in the world. The country also faces other significant public health threats. Poverty, unemployment and violence continue to drive unacceptable levels of poor health in communities. Inequality, stigma and discrimination ensure that those most in need face enormous barriers to services. Our programmes work to reduce the burden of HIV, AIDS, TB, GBV and Covid-19 and contribute to the global strategy to bring about the end of AIDS by 2030. In line with South Africa’s National Strategic Plans, UNAIDS’ 90-90-90 Fast Track targets and the Sustainable Development Goals, NACOSA focuses on those most affected by public health threats: children, adolescents and youth, sex workers, people who inject drugs, survivors of gender-based violence, and other key and vulnerable populations.
Our people are our strength. We offer a dynamic and varied working environment with a strong learning culture and exposure to a local, national and global development community. Our talented, multidisciplinary team are committed to making a difference to the health and wellbeing of South African communities.
At NACOSA, we work hard on the serious issues facing society without losing our sense of fun and community.
